Erik graduated from DeKalb High School, in Waterloo, Indiana, earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Political Science cum laude from St. Joseph 's College in Rensselaer, Indiana and received his Juris Doctor of Law from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago .

While at St. Joseph 's College, Erik served as President of the St. Joseph 's College Student Senate. He also was a four-year member of the St. Joseph 's College varsity football team, playing the position of quarterback. In law school, he represented John Marshall as a member of its American Bar Association Mock Trial Team, which competed against other law schools on a national level.

Erik is licensed to practice in the State of Indiana, the United States District Court for both the Northern District and Southern District of Indiana, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. In addition to his civil litigation experience, he is a former Deputy Prosecutor for DeKalb County, Indiana, and has tried numerous felony and misdemeanor jury trials.

Currently Erik serves as legal counsel for the Municipal City of Auburn, Auburn Municipal Utilities, Auburn Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, The DeKalb County Central United School District, the DeKalb County Office of the Division of Family and Children, and the Union Township Trustee. He has served as special prosecutor in several counties and special counsel to other local municipalities and administrative boards. In 2003 Erik argued before the Indiana Supreme Court in the Case of Mary Neal vs. DeKalb County Division of Family and Children. Erik has experience in both the state and federal court trial settings, as well as state and federal appellate courts.

Erik resides in Auburn, Indiana, and is a member of the DeKalb County Bar (secretary/treasurer 2003-2005, vice-president 2005-2007, president-elect 2007), the Indiana State Bar Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

He is a member of the Auburn Elks, Auburn Classic Lions, and attends the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Over the past several years Erik has served as a Board member for Junior Achievement and the DeKalb Memorial Hospital Medical Ethics Board. In 2001 Erik founded the DeKalb Youth Football League, Inc., a tackle football league open to children in the 3 rd through 6 th grades. He currently serves as the league president and has coached various age groups in the past several years. Erik has also contributed pro bono legal services to DeKalb County Habitat for Humanity and Shelter Ministries.

His personal interests include sports, music, history (Civil War) and politics. Both of Erik's parents are long time residents of DeKalb County and Northeast Indiana, being retired educators. Erik's mother is a native of Brussels, Belgium, and continues to teach as a college instructor part-time. His younger brother Brad is currently in law school.
